| This page tells some GayCams history. And its raison d'être.

Web cams each bring into being a community of friends and regular visitors. These communities are at once unique and deeply intertwined. The hosts invariably began as fans of the cams preceding theirs, and most of their own fans participate in other cam-centered communities. GayCams exists to serve the common needs of these communities, individually and as a single broader community. WHO GC is the nom de plume of the owner of GayCams. I like to use it even though, by now, a lot of people know my real name. I practically never use my own web cam; however, I do participate in the message boards and sometimes appear in Chat or on Radio GayCams. I have met many web cammers in person - the complete list appears below - and I love them all dearly, so be nice to them. GayCams is my personal web site and I take it very personally when someone uses my site and its features to harrass web cammers in any way. Visitors unwilling to behave themselves are invited to go away and get lost. Guy Jeremy is a designer/programmer in Toronto, Canada. He helped me to improve the look and feel of GayCams. He offered assistance just because he likes web cams and he likes GayCams. Guy's personal web cam was listed here in late 1998 until he closed it in 2001. He helped for about a year. I've had help from lots of other people, too. reX did the Poll for a while. Mikey of Funk Cam helps me with all sorts of design work, especially the Splash pages. FlyGuy gave me the original message board, which Tyson helped me to install. Then an anonymous message board user paid the $200 registration renewal fee so that I could update it. A friend of Bryan of ChaosinAustin - known as ErikFL on the message boards - gave me immense help with the Chat feature. I really could go on and on. I get a lot of help! WHAT GayCams is a personal web site. Owing to the help of many others, it has grown far beyond anything I could have imagined but I always intend it to remain personal in character. (Have you noticed how frequently I use the word "I" here?) Every web cam site is listed at the request of - and with the continuing permission of - its individual owner. Without their support, the site could not exist at all. GayCams' existance in any form would be likewise problematical but for the support of Badpuppy, to whom special thanks is owed, and gladly given. Especially to Bill Rivers, the president, and to his executive assistant, Lisa. Also to Stephen, Ben, Ferrell and Brad. They really are the nicest group of people, and they provide me free web-site hosting and other support. I don't know exactly how much of their bandwidth this site has consumed but it's cetainly well past a Terrabyte - 1000 Gigabytes, or 1 million Megabytes - which ordinarily would cost a fortune. Please help them to justify their investment here of money and effort by purchasing even an inexpensive 7-day trial subscription. If you find that Badpuppy does not exactly suit your tastes, so be it. More likely, you will be amazed at what a good value it is. WHEN GayCams was launched August 8, 1998 soon after I discovered live web cams. Within a few weeks, Badpuppy invited me to move it to their server. The next big step was the introduction of a private mailing list exclusively for web cam operators, in December, 1998. It was immediately very popular and has contributed to the building of a greater sense of community among the web cam operators. The site was just a series of normal, static html pages until June, 1999 when database programming enabled the site to actually *do* things for the first time. That was GayCams, Version II. There was going to be a Version III but, well... that's a long story. Maybe I'll be able to get that together one of these days. Call this Version II and a half. WHERE GC is presently living in Las Vegas, Nevada. I came here with Mikey of Funk Cam for the annual porn convention and, somehow, I just never left. Mikey stayed for 7 months before returning to Toronto to finish his degree. Previously, I lived in Ottawa, Canada. I was living in Boise, Idaho, USA when I began GayCams. The site is hosted by Badpuppy from their location very near the Space Center in Florida. WHY I was immediately fascinated with web cams upon discovering them in 1998 - which fascination was matched in equal measure by my annoyance at the inadequacy of the lists then available for finding them. You had to pass through acres of disgusting porno ads to use lists that were barely useful at all, and yet, there was no other way to find web cams. Worst of all, to my way of thinking, there was no distinction made between beautiful, expressive, personal free cam sites and appalling hardcore or commercial cam sites. I thought, "So many of these cams clearly are deserving of much greater respect. It's time somebody did the job right." So, that is what I set out to do. GayCams is intended for a gay audience - but is expressly not intended for the entire gay audience. If you are looking only for a quick wank, you can find about a million other web sites probably much more to your liking - and where, doubtless, you may expect a better reception. As it happens, however, sex-obsessed visitors are highly unlikely ever to see the bottom of this obscure page so I feel very confident in welcoming you here. Thank you for visiting and thank you for your interest in learning what GayCams is all about. |

Below is my ever-lengthening list of all the web cammers I've met.
In October of 1999, I was in Spokane, Washington, and had drinks with Robb, of Desi Cam, and his b/f Chadley - the very first time I ever met web cammers in real life :) Then, a couple of days later, I met Sean and Marc, The Two Fab Fags, in Vancouver, British Columbia. It's one of my favorite cities but, for some reason, we never got far beyond the notorious Dufferin Hotel. Specifically, we didn't get much beyond the downstairs bar where the strippers perform. A few days after that, I was met at the train station in Toronto by Thom, of ThomontheNet, and Brian, of Brianwp. I'd never met Thom before but then he took me right home and gave up his very own bed for me to sleep in for two nights. And both of them took time off of work to show me the sights :-) In February, 2000, I was in Amsterdam where I met Marius. Find out more about that trip on my travel page. He took me and my b/f out for the evening and we chatted for hours just like old friends! In April, 2000, I went to Chicago and met William, of Bearshow.tv, and I stayed at his house for almost one week. He's an old friend of my b/f but I had never met him before. During this time, reX was also in town and staying with Geno, of geNo_viSion and doing his radio show from the dungeon Later in April, I was in Montréal, where I met Rage, of RagingCam. I stayed at the same guest house with him and we went out together several times. We had such a nice time, he invited me to come stay a while at his house in Florida. It was a very busy month. Right after that, I was in Washington, D.C., and I met Ricky, of RickyLive. This was just after he was on the Ricki Lake show and people actually recognized him when we went out together! Then I went to Boston and stayed for several days with Gerry. He was so hospitable! One night, while I was there, we went out and met up with Mark and Bill, of PugCam. Mark is a real web cam pioneer and we found a lot besides cam in common, including politics. Daniel, of D's Live, joined us, too. Then he closed his cam within a couple of days. He assures me that it's a coincidence. I hope so! In July, StevenVision bought me dinner in Montréal. He is a real live Québec nationalist, albeit, one with an English name. They want to split up Canada. I find it all very baffling. In August, 2000, my b/f and I were in New York and we met Mark Allen. Yes, he is just as good-looking in person as on his cam (and magazine covers). We had a terrific time, attending a show together, De La Guarda, and the next night he took us to a bar called, The Lure, where we met up with his friend Gregory who also had a web cam for a while. In September, 2000, I visited Rage at his home in Florida and we traveled together to Atlanta and stayed overnight with Tommy & Sean, of Trek Cam. They took us out, including to Karaoke night at a big club. The next day we went to Nashville and spent a few days with Eric and Matt of Planet Concrete. I was *so* glad when they told me they had met after Matt found Eric's web site listed at GayCams After Rage and I returned to Florida, we visited Badpuppy's offices, just up the road in Cocoa. They've hosted GayCams for all these years and we never met before! We met Lisa - whom Janes is threatening to kidnap so he can have her all to himself - and Bill, the CEO of Badpuppy who shut off his cam a while back, over my protestations. The next weekend, we visited Orlando for a party at CollegeBoysLive. What a lot of toys those guys have: 23 computers, a 10-foot wide TV, a hot tub and countless cameras. Beau, who had posed for Badpuppy as an exclusive model just a week earlier, joined us and we partied until almost dawn while a (mild) hurricane blew past. In October, I visited London and stayed with RobCamLive. While there, I also met Paul quit-calling-me-Fluffy Bailey, Dave & Mark of Groundcontrol and Tom & Kah. I also went to Scotland and Paris. In Paris, I met Hibou and we had such fun that Paul came down on the Chunnel train to join us for a party-til-dawn night of mischief. In November, 2000 I moved to the Washington, DC area where I met Christian Grantham. We went to the Supreme Court together the first time they heard arguments in the Florida ballots case. Here is a picture I took of Christian. Later, I went on his GayBC radio show and we talked about our adventures. A couple of weeks later, I met Sean Patrick and Ricky for dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant in Adams Morgan. Sean is a very entertaining guy. Maybe I am less mystified than before about why he is so famous. On New Years Eve, I attended Christian's party where I met his boyfriend Vince who has a cam of his own. Then, I moved back to Ottawa. In February, 2001 Beau, of Raver Cam, and Larry, of the Void cam, were visiting Ottawa. We all watched Beau play in a hockey tournament and then went bar-hopping. In April, 2001 we went to Niagara Falls and spent a night in Toronto where we had a l-o-n-g dinner with Guy -in- Toronto. In May, 2001 we went to Toronto again and, this time, met Guy, Beau and Tom, of Raver Boys, ThomontheNet, Brianwp and Mikey of Funk Cam. We did brunch and dinner, both, and tried to do a radio show in between. A terrific time was had by all! Then I didn't travel for a longish time until after Christmas when I came back to Toronto, and Brian and Thom invited Mikey and me to dinner at their condo, followed by Mikey's surprise birthday party as soon as Beau showed up. Then we went to Remingtons strip bar. Mikey and I got on the train and went to Chicago for New Years Eve at Geno's bar Cocktail in Chicago. Then got back on the train to San Francisco where we met Evil Gene, who took us bar-hopping in the Castro. Dark bars where he could grope Mikey! At last, we arrived exhausted in Las Vegas for the Porn convention. Zillafag got in late the same night and I could hardly keep my eyes open, but he and Mikey went out gambling until 5AM and won a little money. The next night, Friday, we all three went to meet Vegasboy and his charming b/f at the Gipsy. Durlx arrived on Saturday and took the room next to ours. AlexG from the message boards joined us later to go meet Bryan of ChaosinAustin. That is somebody I've wanted to meet for a very long time. I was so, so glad! We all visited for a while and then went off to a porn awards ceremony. Everybody had so much fun, mostly trying to figure out who were the porn stars, the past porn stars, and the porn star wannabe's. LOL. I made introductions all around, between our group and the Badpuppy people. Bryan and I so wanted to meet William Higgins but we never got up enough nerve to talk to him by ourselves. Chi Chi LaRue was the MC and announced prizes for reX (absent) and for Naked Tony. I was hugely surprised when Tony's b/f Steve rose to accept. I introduced myself and we chatted until a Brazillian porn star (and prize winner) came over to chat up Steve, which very abruptly ended our conversation. LOL. Bryan and Mikey got pix taken with Chi Chi. Mikey didn't come back to our room that night. (I would not dare to tell you where he spent the night, and you'll never guess.) The next night Steve from Dazed Cam joined us and took everybody for a ride in his red convertible sports car (a rental), definitely the best way to enjoy the Las Vegas Strip. For more details and photos from these events, visit ChaosinAustin's photojournal and find the sections Vegas1 and Vegas2. A few weeks after all the visitors left, and Mikey and I had decided to stay and live in Las Vegas, reX made a visit to the City of Entertainment. We did a bit of bar-hopping and sight-seeing. In May, 2003, my roommate Bok and I visited Palm Springs for a couple of days and we were hosted there by Tristan. Tristan was, of course, a perfect gentleman and host. I now anticipate that he will reciprocate by verifying that I too behaved as a perfect gentleman and guest. If he reports anything else, well, then, just don't believe him that's all. ;) In January, 2004 we got together again in Las Vegas on the occasion of the porno convention. Durlx, Zillafag and Tristan represented the cammers. And there were several web cam fans. We watched Johan Palik frolicking naked in a hot tub with other (lesser) porno stars and saw Lucas Ridgestone. We also went to a cocktail party at the Venetian which featured an open bar and live sex shows. In July, 2004, on my way home from South Africa, I made a stop in Washington in July, 2004, and got in touch with OneWasJohnny. Web cammer #42! It's a number with some significance in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Meaning of life, or some such. He thought that was pretty cool. We went to a gay club in Dupont Circle and we chatted until very late, and we made plans to go to a strip club. Anytime I travel, I contact web cammers in the area and we always have fun together. I usually use the front page at GayCams to announce who I'm meeting and where but, so far, not many web cam fans have jumped at the chance. To keep informed about such kinds of events - and other kinds of special events - please subscribe to the GayCams mailing list. |
